Philosophy & Mission

Health Philosophy

No matter what your situation or budget, there are things everyone can do that can have a huge impact on your physical fitness and sense of wellbeing. At a basic level, health should mean 'a joy in living'. And this can include enjoying (and tasting!) the many pleasures of this world. Regardless of age, it is important not just to live, but to live well.

I've always had a passion for healthy living. The human body responds positively to a life naturally led, in line with or closer to that of our early ancestors. Millenia later, we have shifted further and further away from this, to the point where most of us don't recognise that what we are eating and doing is neither natural, nor healthy. Pesticides that are sprayed onto our food have been shown to be neurotoxic, carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting, to list just one example. We've become totally reliant on convenience food, grown using environmentally detrimental farming practices, and collectively we know very little of the foraging habits of our ancestors.

I have always worked to understand health in the context of science, which is why my approach is driven by scientific data and utilises natural treatments based on the most recent clinical and biomedical research into phytotherapy medicine. I only use products whose safety and efficacy has been well-established. The world of natural medicine and the scientific community are no longer disparate elements. Read scientific papers and you'll see they frequently and increasingly use the language and reasoning of naturopaths.

Natural approaches sometimes take time to work, but are longer-lasting. In this 'quick-fix' society, we expect to recover from illness over-night. We need to recondition ourselves to allow 'time to be ill', as back-to-front as that sounds nowadays. Rather than being afraid of the state of illness or trying to mask symptoms just for the sake of it, we shouldn't hurry being well again. We need to give our bodies the opportunity, chance and right conditions to self-heal.

Every step of our lives our diet and lifestyle can be determinative of future health. Even from pre-conception, environmental factors can affect the quality of egg and sperm cells, with oxidative stress causing chromosomal damage and DNA fragmentation. Sperm counts are dropping globally, with a cocktail of chemical pollutants implicated, with fingers being pointed at the 3 P's, pesticides, plastics and pills (paracetamol in particular), and Erin Brockovich has recently been sounding the alarm over this global sperm-count crisis.

However with advancements now in the understanding of epigenetics, we now know our DNA doesn't have to write our story. The environment we bathe our genes in can switch them on and off. What we eat, and how we live, can heavily influence gene expression, giving us power over our future. It is never too late and at any age it is possible to completely rejuvenate and revive one's mind and body.

'A little bit of this won't hurt and a little bit of that won't hurt'. In a world where everything is now toxic, unfortunately 'everything in moderation' is now toxic.

Mission

Maintaining health can feel like a daunting task. Very few of us have perfect health and all of us have things we could do better but that we find challenging for one reason or another. Breaking habits can seem impossible at first. As your nutritional therapist, I can help you overcome big obstacles, by breaking them down into easier steps. I can help you make sense of your symptoms, putting the pieces of the puzzle together to find the root causes. I can show you how to manage dietary and lifestyle factors that may be triggering or mediating your condition.

Unlike when visiting a GP, consultations with nutritional therapists are much longer, which gives time to take a full case history, hear your story and build up a full picture. GPs have a tendency to over-rely on prescription pharmaceuticals, often leading to an 'intervention cascade' where one artificial input leads to the need for another. The saying 'If your GP prescribes you medications before asking about your diet and lifestyle, they are a dealer, not a healer' might be harsh but it is in the realms of fair. A pandemic of anti-microbial resistant diseases is a now a real prospect in the not too distant future due to the overuse of antibiotics.

At Natalia Waring Nutrition, we'll go back to basics and dig down to the bottom of any health issues. I will write a letter for your GP to inform them you are working with me and ensure everything has been considered and that my plan does not conflict with any doctor's advice or prescriptions.

Come and see me early on when a problem starts, or ideally before it starts. Let's work together to create the optimum diet and lifestyle for you, addressing current health complaints and reducing risk of future problems. I will share with you the information you need to take charge of your own health and empower your own decision-making.

Here in the UK, healthy life expectancy is decreasing. This means, that while people are living long lives on average, the last ten years for many people are spent in ill health, suffering from chronic diseases, a lot of which are preventable. As a nutritionist, I aim to help people live well for longer, without pain, the symptoms of ageing and the burden of chronic disease. Simply dying of old age is increasingly seen an 'if you're lucky' scenario, when it should be the norm.

Children, in the UK in particular, are now on average shorter and sicker than a decade ago. This sentence should shock anyone reading it. The early years of a child's life can be critical and determinative of future health. I would like to support children's health and support parents of those children as they raise fit and healthy young people.

You are the expert on your body, and the most important thing to me is listening to you and focusing on what most concerns you. I am not here to judge you or your body, any decisions you made in the past or even how you get on with the plan I write for you. Let's take incremental steps toward improving your health and I really look forward to seeing the positive results of our work together.

As your nutritionist, I'm on a mission to help make Herefordians healthier - we can do this!
